    Cyclone Nargis sweeps Myanmar's capital

YANGON (Xinhua): Strong cyclone Nargis, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, swept Myanmar's capital Yangon early Saturday morning, paralysing the city's power and communications.

Xinhua reporters witnessed that all the trees in their compound had been blown down. And by press time, people still dared not to open doors and windows, fearing the cyclone would swept away the roofs of their houses.

On Friday morning, Nargis lashed Haing Gyi Island, coastal region of the country's southwestern Ayeyawaddy division. The cyclone's speed was once as high as up to 192 km per hour, while it was 120 km per hour as it swept across some main regions such as Pathein, Myaungmya, Laputta, Mawlamyinegyun, Kyongmange, Bogalay, Chaungtha, Ngwesaung, Tharyawaddy and Gwa, according to the State Meteorology Department.
