Two held for posting letters with explosives to officials

Lucknow (PTI): Two persons were arrested on Friday for allegedly posting over 150 letters containing explosive powder to senior officials including judges in Kanpur district.

"Two persons Deepak and RS Gutpa have been arrested for sending the letters containing the explosive powder to over 50 persons including judges and senior officers in Kanpur district", Special Secretary Home Sarvesh Chandra Mishra told reporters here.

He said that the powder contained in the letters was identified as TNT (Tri Nitro Toluyene), which is an explosive.

The investigation was going on in the case, he said, adding that the duo arrested confessed to having sent over 150 such letters by speed post which are likely to be delivered at their respective destinations in the days to come.

Panic gripped civil court premises Kanpur yesterday when such letters were received by 41 judicial officers including a judge.

Ten more such letters were received by some politicians, MLAs and some newpaper offices in Kanpur today. 1

The content of all the letters is the same which mentions a woman's name and alleges that she had murdered her first husband Manoj Gupta.

Police officials in Kanpur had so far claimed quoting preliminary reports that the powder-like substance contained in the letters was not an explosive.
