Islamabad (PTI): Pakistan Supreme Court on Thursdayadjourned the hearing of petitions challenging the release from detention of Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed for two weeks, as the Deputy Attorney General sought more time for presenting fresh evidence.

Saeed was placed under house arrest in December after a UNSC committee added him and the JuD to a list of people and organisations linked to al-Qaeda or the Taliban.

Soon after a three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursdayresumed hearing of federal and Punjab governments' petitions against the release of JuD Chief by Lahore High Court, Deputy Attorney General Shah Khawar requested the court for more time for presenting fresh evidence, due to which the case was adjourned for two weeks.

Advocate General Punjab Raza Farooq informed the court that Punjab government was ready to revisit its request for withdrawal from the case if the federal government came up with fresh evidence.

As the two petitions are clubbed, therefore the Punjab government might revisit its request, Farooq submitted before the court.

Mr. Khawar told journalists that he was optimistic that he will be able to persuade the court with the existing evidence to set aside Lahore High Court's verdict. He said that the federal government would pursue the case and it had sufficient material to prove its stance.
