Colombo (IANS): A prominent Tamil politician Sunday criticised a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu legislature seeking a ceasefire in Sri Lanka "as shocking and totally unacceptable"

V. Anandasangaree of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) also urged politicians from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu to come to Sri Lanka "on a fact finding mission".

Anandasangaree, who is opposed to the Tamil Tigers, said in a statement that the Tamil Nadu resolution asking the Indian government to pressure Colombo to start talks with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was unacceptable.

"This will cause a lot of embarrassment to the government of India itself. It is a pity that supporters of the motion failed to realise that it won't take much time for the Sri Lankan parliament to pass a vote of censure against the unwarranted interference of the Tamil Nadu assembly," he said.

Anandasangaree said no Tamil Nadu politician barring the present Indian Finance Minister P. Chidamabaram had visited Sri Lanka. Chidambaram made the visit two decades ago while playing a key role in India's efforts to bring peace in Sri Lanka.

"We very much welcome friendly advice and all other assistance from Tamil Nadu to solve the ethnic problem," he said, adding however that Indian leaders should not be "misled" by the LTTE.
