Houston (PTI): America will have to shell out USD 4.4 trillion if it needs clean energy, according to a plan drawn by Google Inc that calls for a big push in wind, solar and geothermal power to replace fossil fuels.

Vying to make America environmentally friendly, the internet giant is fleshing out a proposal to curtail the use of oil and coal by 2030, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

As per the plan, Hybrid and electric cars along with renewables would get a major boost, the paper quoted Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive, as saying.

By replacing conventional vehicles with Hybrid and electric vehicles, the US would consume 38 percent less oil.

Google hopes to reduce the energy industry's reliance on coal (currently the source of 50 per cent of electricity), natural gas (20 per cent) and nuclear energy (20 per cent), the daily said.

If the plan, which includes increasing dependability on wind power, geothermal and solar energy, gets implemented, electricity consumption will be reduced considerably while fossil fuel use would be cut by 88 per cent and carbon emissions would be reduced by 95 per cent by 2030, Google projects.

The plan would cost USD 4.4 trillion, but according to Google it will save USD 1 trillion over the 22-year life of the plan as renewables become cheaper and gasoline gets more expensive.
