Pak. SC issues notice to Geo TV for inaccurate reporting

Islamabad (PTI): Taking suo motu notice of an "inaccurate" report aired by Geo News about a meeting between the Interior Secretary and the Chief Justice, Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday directed the TV channel's bureau chief to appear before it to give an explanation.

The channel had reported yesterday that Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah had conveyed a special message to Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and that two other senior judges of the apex court were present during the meeting.

The office of the court's Registrar, however, denied any such meeting and called it incorrect reporting.

The court, in its order, said that from now on, no news about judges of the court and other sensitive issues could be flashed in the media without verification by the Supreme Court's Registrar.

Attorney General Malik Qayyum told journalists that the Supreme Court had ordered Geo's bureau chief Absar Alam to personally appear before it on May 12 and explain why such misreporting had occurred.

Qayyum said the court's Registrar had made a telephone call to the channel's administration and asked them to explain their position on the report.

However, Geo's administration asked the Registrar to send a written request for the explanation.

The apex court also issued notice to the chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, ordering him to appear before it with the code of conduct for the electronic media.
