PM on Indo-US deal: Talks with coalition allies on
Moscow (PTI): Keeping hopes alive on the Indo-US nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said efforts were continuing to evolve a broad-based consensus with Left allies.
"It (Indo-US nuclear deal) is a subject matter of discussion with our coalition partners and the process of evolving a broad-based consensus with coalition partners is still on," he said here when asked when India would approach the IAEA for negotiations safeguards agreement.
Singh was speaking at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin after their talks on various issues, including cooperation in nuclear field.
India is required to negotiate a safeguards agreement with IAEA as an important step towards implementation of the civil nuclear deal with the US.
However, the UPA government's Left allies are strongly opposed to implementation of the Indo-US deal, insisting that it would adversely affect the country's independent foreign policy and strategic interest.
To end the stand-off, a UPA-Left Committee is holding discussions, with five rounds of discussions already being held. The next round of talks was scheduled for November 16 but it has been postponed indefinitely.
