  • Govt 'abdicating' its accountability to Parliament: CPI(M)

New Delhi (PTI): The CPI(M) on Wednesday said the UPA government has "abdicated" its accountability to Parliament by convening its session almost two months after it was originally scheduled.

Disapproving the Cabinet decision "not to call the monsoon session which should have been convened on August 11", the CPI(M) Politburo said this meant that "there will not be any winter session either".

The government yesterday decided to convene the next session from October 17 till November 21.

"The UPA government is abdicating its accountability to Parliament especially when serious developments like the disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir and Orissa are taking place," the Politburo said.

Party Politburo member Sitaram Yechury had yesterday accused the government of subverting democracy by dovetailing Parliament session with that of the US Congress in the hope that the Indo-US nuclear deal would be passed in Washington by then.

"The government hopes the US Congress will clear the nuclear deal and wants to face Parliament only after that happens," he had said.
