Vidushi honoured

Sumathi Ramamohan Rao proved her versatility, once again.

Versatile performer Sumathi Ramamohan Rao proved her mettle.

Dandamudi Sumathi Ramamohan Rao is an ace mridangam player who was tutored by her husband and veteran mridanga vidwan Dandamudi Ramamohan Rao. She is also the founder of Laya Vedika Sabha, which was formed exclusively to provide a platform for percussion artistes.

Sumathi, a top grade artiste of Akashvani, had accompanied many famous vidwans and received accolades. She is also a Bharatanatyam artiste and worked as a Bharatanatyam lecturer for many years in Vijayawada and Guntur Government music and dance colleges.

The Vijayawada Cultural Academy fittingly honoured Sumathi Ramamohan Rao in a colourful function organised at Sri Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kala Vedika situated on the grounds of Government College of Music and Dance. Guests of honour in the function were M. Lakshmi Kumari, G. Narayana Rao, Palagani Prabhakar Rao, Sarada Ramakrishna and K. Durga Nagamani.

The function was followed by an impressive dance performance by Durbha Rajeswari Mownika. Exhibiting precise footwork and artistic abhinayam, Rajeswari Mownika performed Pushpanjali followed by Deva Kautham in Mohana and Alarimpu in Hamsadhvani with admirable skill. Her Jatiswaram in Revathi and Varnam in Sankarabharanam amply proved her talent.

The dance performance came to a close with a Javali and thillana. Natyacharya Ghantasala Pavankumar directed the programme and also rendered efficient nattuvangam. Melodious vocal support came from K. Suryanarayana and Ch. Santi. Founder secretary of the Cultural Academy, Seeram Subramanyam offered vote of thanks.
