Back to the issues

Meaningful N. Chandra

Director N. Chandra, who is known for meaningful films like “Ankush” and “Pratighaat” as well as commercial success stories like “Tezaab” and “Narsimha”, was recently in town to promote his latest creation, “Yeh Mera India”. The film is hard hitting and according to Chandra might make people uncomfortable because of the issues it raises. The film has some seasoned actors like Anupam Kher, Seema Biswas, Atul Kulkarni, Vijay Raaz and Sarika. We caught him in a small chitchat session and here is what the man himself has to say about “Y.M.I”.

So what’s the plot? Well, this is a realistic movie, which deals with the issues that common people face in their day-to-day life…things, which people try to avoid because that makes them sit up and take notice. They might feel uneasy because some questions might also be posed at them.

Can you throw some light on the kind of issues you have tried to raise?

The film has six different plots woven together in the time span of 24 hours. It deals with issues like women’s security, discrimination on the basis of religion and work-based issues. I hope the audience likes our effort and we are able to bring some change in the existing patterns of our society. Even if people take out time to think about the issues we have tried to highlight, I feel, it will be a success.

You have a really impressive line-up of actors in your movie. How was the experience of working with such wonderful actors?

Since it is a serious movie, I wanted actors who could do complete justice to my characters. And considering the track record of my actors, I feel I couldn’t have managed to get a better cast than this. It was an amazing learning opportunity for me.

What are your promotional strategies for this film?

We are showing promos in theatres and have hoardings and billboards to publicise our film. You can find the promos running on television and the radio. And we have been talking to the media continuously in various cities.

You moved from serious cinema to comedies like “Style” and now you back to the meaningful, what’s next?

I am working on some scripts right now, it includes comedies as well. I never wanted to stick to one genre. However, at present, I would just like to concentrate on “Yeh Mera India”.
