In a breezy interview, Gordon Liu, a Kung Fu Master who acted in “Chandni Chowk to China”, speaks about his experiences. Excerpts.
My role: In ‘Chandni Chowk to China,’ I play a bad guy who in his younger days captures a young girl for himself. Akshay Kumar, the hero, comes to rescue her in the revenge drama.
My attire: I’m a bad Chinese guy. Attired in a black Chinese coat with a hat and stick, I resemble a mafia boss. Working with Nikhil Advani: I have worked with Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino. In Bollywood it is different. My earlier director was funny and would crack jokes in Chinese. Nikhil is serious and encourages everyone to work hard. I liked working with him.
Working with Akshay: Akshay is a superstar. I have a lot of action scenes with him. In the film, Akshay does not know Kung Fu or any other martial art form. But as an actor, he uses his body language to express himself. In martial arts too, you have to use your body language in an alert mode. Akshay is professional. He can act, perform amazing stunts and be cool.
Working with Deepika: When I first met Deepika, I was surprised. She is so beautiful and looks like a doll. She is tall, taller than Uma Thurman.
Difference between Hollywood and Bollywood: It’s huge. It’s about the culture. In Bollywood, there’s more of singing and dancing. Hollywood is more commercial. Besides, in Hollywood, the unit works for 12 hours only.
In Bollywood, like for this film in Hong Kong, it was more than 12 hours. In Hollywood, if you work for a week, you’re entitled to a day off, but here they work non-stop. No Sunday. No holiday. They work every single day.
Song sequences: This is my first Bollywood experience. I was unaware of the singing and dancing scenes. I just had action scenes. Some day, I hope I too can sing and dance in a film.
Funny incidents: As I am the bad guy, Akshay fights me in the film. He fights with bare hands and there is no bloodshed. His brisk action movements were like chopping vegetables and I found that really funny. Another funny thing was the way we spoke different languages on the sets. At times, he would speak Hindi which I wouldn’t understand; and at times, I would speak Mandarin which he wouldn’t understand. Shooting at the Great Wall of China: This film is special, as for the first time, it features an action sequence picturised on the Great Wall of China. The experience made me feel proud.
