My Favourite Raga
Some ragas are by nature sad but Jinjhoti has melody in it.
Lalit Rao: I like Jinjhoti
Lalit Rao, the scion of Agra gharana of Ustad Faiyaz Khan fame, disciple of the acclaimed Pt. Rama Rao and Ustad Khadim Hussain Khan, says, “I like raga Jinjhoti, because this raga brings out the emotion of happiness.
“Some ragas are by nature sad but Jinjhoti has melody in it. Melody is not just a chance combination of notes, but an organic and dynamic whole, a form which is more than the simple sum of the notes of which it consists. The notes are ‘sa pa ma ga komal re sa; re sa ni komal dha ma pa dha sa.’ All the notes in between are determined by conscious striving towards the last note. “The motif and the series of repetitions grow stimulating different types of awareness. The combination of notes in Jinjhoti are most soothing and take away the stress. There is a calming and balming effect in it.
“Although music always conveys some sense, like the spoken language which conveys human experience; the syntax of notes is just as important and is based on human experience. Taken a little further, folk music is the unconscious expression in melody of different ethnic cultures.”
