The Bharatanatyam performance by Ushanthini Sripathmanathan organised under the auspices of the Rasika Ranjana Sabha, Tiruchi, at the FGN hall recently, was a sequence of neatly arranged pieces, which when viewed in progression evoked the feeling of
seeing a dancer deeply rooted in tradition with no affinity towards gimmickry.
Ushanthini commenced her programme with Pushpanjali in Gambhiranattai set to Adi talam. Her precise punctuations were a real treat. Dhandayuthapani Pillai’s composition ‘Swamiyai Varacholladi’ in Purvikalyani was the next item where the ecstatic dance movements were portrayed with energy and excitement, keeping the audience spellbound. In the next piece, ‘Devi Neeye Thunai’ of Papanasam Sivan in Kiravani (Adi), the artist displayed an excellent sense of timing with an expressive face and a supple body.
Perfect technique
For ‘Koovi Nee Azhaithal’ in ragam Valaji, once again in Adi talam, Ushanthini displayed perfection of technique and dexterity of movements in the pure dance aspects, and displayed uninhibited expressional capabilities and dramatic skills.
Thillana, an unusual piece set in raga Simhendramadhyamam (Adi) was a wonderful number where the dancer wove different patterns of footwork revealing her ability to execute challenging routines.
Nattuvangam was by Guru Kumbakonam A. Gajendran who received a special applause from the audience.
