Visakha Music and Dance Academy organised a function to celebrate the birth anniversary of Susarla Surya Bhagavath Sankara Sastry (1899-1988), founder of Kalabharati on March 3. (Incidentally, his death anniversary is also on the same day). While i
ts president C.S.N. Raju was in the chair, Ramanandha Saraswathi Swamy and Gopala Sastry (eldest son of Sastry), founder-secretary of the Kalabharati, were guests of honour. They recalled how Sastry collected funds, secured a site and raised a repository-cum-auditorium called Thyagaraja Nilayam. Besides the presentation of its annual awards to M.P.S. Ravali (vocal), B. Sasikala (Kuchipudi), Ch..R. Kiranmayi (violin), M.V. Meher Kalyani (mridangam), G. Satyaprasad (mandolin) and K. Kamaladeepti (veena), the evening was had a vocal recital by Bhamidipati Lalitha Madhav in the company of G. Annajirao on violin and D. Dharmarao on mridangam. .
