Banyan Tree Events brings a festival of Carnatic music to New Delhi.
|
Banyan Tree Events, a company that has made a name for itself in arranging cultural festivals with flair in cities across India, returns to the Capital with Dakshinayan, a festival of Carnatic music, this Friday evening at Kamani auditorium. The featured artistes are Ganesh and Kumaresh, the violin wizards, and veteran vocalist T.V. Sankaranarayanan.
A rarity
While none of these musicians is new to Delhi audiences, their visits do create ripples as concerts of excellent Carnatic music are more the rarity than the norm here.
Says Kumaresh, who, along with brother Ganesh has been performing since he was little bigger than a violin himself, “Delhi is a very great place to perform. It is a very cosmopolitan audience.”
Similarly, Sankaranarayanan, who will be performing in Delhi after a year, finds loyal “hardcore” listeners in Delhi. He will be accompanied by M.C. Madhav on the violin and A.S. Ranganathan on the mridangam.
While Sankaranarayanan plans to present a traditional “uncompromising” concert of classical Carnatic music, Ganesh and Kumaresh are known for their fusion and experimental works as well. At Dakshinayan, their plan is to present both the traditional kritis of Carnatic music and their own format, which they have named Ragapravaham. This too, though differently packaged, contains compositions based on ragas and talas, explains Kumaresh.
However, whether the audience is knowledgeable or not, feels Kumaresh, is “not such an important parameter”, because most people, even if they are well versed in music, are there to enjoy themselves, and the performers have only to provide them the means.
Why wait then? Collect your donor cards and enjoy!
