Spanish movie fiesta

SAJINI V. SAHADEVAN

A ‘Spanish Film Fest’ will begin in Thiruvananthapuram on March 11.

First screening: ‘Vete De Mi’ kicks off the fete.

Film buffs are in for a delight as the ‘Spanish Film Fest’ comes to Thiruvananthapuram. Organised by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA), the festival is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Culture, Kerala, and Casa De La India, Spain.

The presence of celebrated director Carlos Saura is the highlight of the festival. The event will be inaugurated by M.A. Baby, Minister for Culture, at Kalabhavan Theatre on March 11 at 6 p.m.

“What is special about the fete is that all the films are new. Each film will have an important delegate such as the director or actor representing it.

“The festival is an exchange programme of sorts as a package of Malayalam films will be screened in Spain too,” says Bina Paul Venugopal, Deputy Director (Festivals), KSCA.

Ten films

Ten films will be screened over a period of five days. These include Carlos Saura’s musical documentary ‘Fados,’ which is also his latest work, along with ‘El Camino Los Ingleses,’ a tale of love and lust of a group of friends on a vacation during the late 1970s, by actor-director Antonio Banderas, Jorge Sanchez-Cabezudo’s thriller ‘La Noche De Girasoles,’ which unfolds through different perspectives and ‘Yo Soy La Juani’ by Bigas Luna among others.

Actors Maria Ruiz, Rosa Sarda, Ingrid Rubio, directors Julio Medem, Bigas Luna, Jorge Sanchez-Cabezudo and film producer Beatriz de la Gandara will be among the delegates for the festival.

The first screening ‘Vete De Mi,’ by Victor Garcia Leon is scheduled for 3 p.m. on the same day.
