Artistic fare: Thullal thrayam by Kalamandalam Prabhakaran and party
A slew of cultural programmes was held in connection with the Naveekarana Kalasam at Sree Koodalmanickam Temple, Irinjalakuda.
In the Carnatic concert series, Changanassery Madhavan Namboodiri gave a memorable concert on the first day.
Erudite alaapana
An erudite alaapana of Hindolam preceding the Annamacharya kriti, ‘Devadevam bhaje’ and a Poorvikalyani piece ‘Paramapaavana Rama’ were pointers to his calibre. The selection and rendering of the Arabhi kriti ‘Chutamurare’ was excellent. Veteran percussionist Parassala Ravi enhanced the concert with his delicate touches and timely beats.
Shengottai Harihara Subramanian tested the patience of the audience with a longHamsadwani (‘Vathaapi’) before settling on a serene ‘Entharomahanubhavulu’ (Sree) and a well structured ragam-thanam-pallavi in Kaapi.
A.M. Harinarayanan ably supported the vocalist on the mridangam. R.K. Sooryaprakash presented a soothing Sahana (‘Rama Ika Nannu’) and an elaborate Abheri (‘Nagumo’).
Alleppy Sreekumar sang ‘Pakkala’ (Kharaharapriya), ‘Ninnunera’ (Panthuvarali) and a ragam-thanam-pallavi in Kamboji.
A musical ensemble Naadamaithrikam, coordinated by Thudi Irinjalakluda, were some of the programmes held in connection with the Naveekarana Kalasam
A rarely heard Tyagaraja kriti ‘Sattaleni Dinamu’ in raga Naganandini and one or two Marathi Abhangs were also included in the concert. His son, Harisankar, also accompanied him. In fact, Sreekumar gave more space to his son throughout the concert, as if to promote him.
A musical ensemble Naadamaithrikam, coordinated by Thudi Irinjalakluda, incorporating various musical instruments such as the veena (Baiju), violin (Thirunelloor Ajith Kumar), flute (Mahadevan), mridangam (Balakrishna Kammath), ghatam (Sreejith), morsing (Gopakumar) and edakka (Nandakumar). They presented ‘Entharo,’ ‘Bhavayami,’ and ‘Nagumomu’ to name a few kritis.
Thullal thrayam
A Thullal thrayam, dwelling on the three variants of the Thullal – Ottan, Parayan and Seethankan, was performed by Kalamandalam Prabhakaran and party. Krishnanattom by Guruvayoor Kalanilayam, Mohiniyattam by Natanakaisiki, Mizhavu melam by Ammannoor Gurukulam, bhajans by Thyagabrahmam T.S. Radhakrishnan, Kathakali by Unnayi Warrier Kalanilayam and a dance recital by Narendrakumar and Anusha Narendrakumar were the other items included in the itinerary on various days.
Thayambaka by up-and-coming artistes were also staged daily, of which one by young Cherussery Anand showed signs of promise.
The cultural meet came to an end with a Sreeramapattabhishekam Kathakali on the last day.
