Comfort and convenience are the two key factors in sustaining any workout schedule. But many fitness experts tend to pay less attention to these, forcing their trainees to follow stereotypical regimes. But quite plesantly, such was not the case with G. Bharathi Raja, partner, Yours Lifestyle Gym and Slim fitness centre. He turned out to be more sensitive to each customer's needs and that made me happy and also boosted my confidence given my past experiences in fitness studios.

I agreed reluctantly for my session with M. Raja initially. But it turned out that the opening was not with weights but purely counselling. That was a relief as the trainer gathered as much information he could about me. I noticed he was more keen to know what I disliked.

Intense analysis

“Exercising is a mind and muscle game. It needs intense analysis before you step into any schedule. I try to make my trainees comfortable. Once that is achieved half the work is done,” he explained much to my glee.

After a 20-minute pep talk, it was time for a warm-up stretching session with sticks. I was given a stick and asked to bend sideways. There were also routines without the sticks. With each motion in different angle, it was quite new to me. Fifteen minutes later, I was put on the treadmill, hip rotator and the cycle given my weight. “A person with optimum weight does hammer and biceps curls straightaway. But in your case, we need to progress gradually or else you may break down putting an end to all your aspirations,” he explained.

When I followed his advice for 10 minutes without much struggle, he gave the nod to lay my hands on the sophisticated equipment. The first set of routines are meant for primary muscles such as biceps, triceps, forearms and calf which I did with low weight dumbbells. Next I was ready for the flat bench press and incline press and by the end of which I was profusely sweating and the trainer called my session off. “There is a popular dictum in fitness that one should not repeat similar routines in succession. There should be sufficient gap between them. For you should not let the mind drift away and should understand that you are working hard to get fit. Hence, it will be different set of exercises tomorrow,” he let me free fast on day One.
