Who can resist the delectable Mysore Pak? This is one sweet Bengalureans can’t get enough of. Made of ghee, sugar, and roasted gram flour, Mysore Pak owes its origins to, as the name suggests, to Mysore, where the royal cook, Kakasura Madappa, invented the sweet in the court of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV.
Bengaluru is now also famous for Mysore Pak or Mysurpa. Among the most sought after sweet shops that sell the best Mysore Pak are Sri Venkateswara Sweetmeat Stall, Sri Krishna Sweets, and Anand Sweets.
Mysore Pak comes in two varieties. One is the softer form and the other is a crispier, porous, hardened form, each of which has a distinct taste.
When asked where the best Mysore Pak is found in the city, a variety of answers came up. Software engineer, Pavitra H., says she adores the sweet, as, “It has a number of varieties and flavours such as cardamom and honey,” adding: “I think the best Mysore Pak is sold at Krishna Sweets, from Coimbatore, and Mahalakshmi sweets.”
Anuradha, a student, however says that the original Mysore Pak is found at Gundappa Sweets. “It is located on Basaveshwaranagar and has been around since the 1970s. My family speaks highly of the Mysore Pak there.” Nirmala A. says the best Mysore Pak is available at, “Maiyas in Jayanagar , and at Pulla Reddy’s. What makes Mysore Pak soft and wholesome is the excellent quality of ghee used.”
Sridevi, who prepares Mysore Pak at home, says that the sweet is the most difficult to prepare. “You need to know the right time when to take it off the flame,” she says.
Undoubtedly Bengaluru is synonymous with Mysore Pak. If you haven’t tried this sweet yet, then head to any of the well-known shops mentioned and try it!
