Location is the first rule on any property, more so a resort. And the positioning is what makes Indriya Beach Resort and Spa, Cherai, so special. This five-acre expanse, sandwiched between the sea and the serene backwaters, with a little lake thrown in between, is the city’s new hospitality experience.

With its geographical proximity to the Muziris heritage sites, the resort, in its architecture and ambience, attempts to fuse with the historicity of the place. They also house a good collection of items of historic interest, mostly garnered from the nearby sites.

The spacious lobby that has a definite boat theme in its décor and leads you to the different wings of the resort. They also have a theme song, composed by Stephen Devassy that filters into every room, sometimes overpowered by the sound of the waves.

Indriya does not get stuck on uniform type of accommodation options. It offers a variety of choices, 48 rooms and cottages, from a tree-house overlooking the sea, contemporary sea-facing rooms, to high-end ‘Poyil’ cottages with individual jacuzzi pools, typically Kerala-style traditional houses with open bathrooms with a glorious view of the backwaters. There are rooms on the houseboat that anchors in the middle of the backwaters, with all in house facilities. Most of the rooms have the sea or the backwaters perfectly framed . Some of them offer a magnificent view from the puff of your bathtub or private pool.

The architecture, interiors, furnishing of the rooms and cottages, except perhaps for the tree house, blends perfectly with the location. The tariff ranges from Rs. 8,000-Rs. 25,000 per day depending on the rooms.

Like most high-end resorts Indriya has a well-equipped beauty parlour and a state-of-the-art spa that also offers traditional Ayurveda therapy.

Dining out

For the foodies, especially for those who love to dine outside the comfort of their rooms, there are two in-house restaurants, The Malabar, a sea-facing restaurant that serves ethnic coastal delicacies and the poolside ‘Yavanapriya’ which serves global cuisine. Guests can participate in catching fish, using the old Chinese fishing nets.

a chance to dive into a live catch from the Chinese fishing net on a barbecue island.

There are a clutch of activities that guests can indulge in. It includes a trip on the Muziris trail, learning authentic Kerala cuisine from the village folks, kayaking, basking in the sun at a private beach, deep-sea fishing with the fishermen and other in-house activities.

The resort boasts of two venues where groups can spend special moments. ‘Pattanam’ is a high-ceilinged banquet hall, with intricate woodwork, that can comfortably accommodate around 250 people. For a more formal get together they have a boardroom ‘Sangam’ with the latest audio-visual equipment. The most sought-after venue for more intimate events is ‘Aanjali’ a backwater boat jetty and Amphorae a party hall that overlooks the backwater.

Indriya, as the name suggests, promises to satisfy all your senses.
