Tucked away in the arms of the Eastern Ghats, Lammasingi (1,000 metres above mean sea level), which has been in the news for its zero-to-single-digit temperatures, is a traveller’s delight. A three-hour drive from Visakhapatnam leads one to this lush green spot, enveloped in a thick blanket of fog.

Located at a distance of 12 km before Chintapalle, Lammasingi is said to have recorded zero degree C on January 15, 2012, and has already touched single-digit temperatures this season. The temperatures are expected to dip further by the second week of January. While the place has been gaining popularity as a day-time travel spot, the real beauty of Lammasingi can best be experienced when you spend a night amidst the hills. Because of its elevation and pristine environment sans any traces of pollution, Lammasingi offers a magnificent view of the crystal-clear night sky, dotted with twinkling stars.

It almost appears like a live planetarium. This spectacular sight lasts till midnight, after which a veil of mist descends upon the place. During the early hours of the day, the village of Lammasingi sees a surge of bikers and travellers from the port city, making their way to this place to experience the charm of Nature, and admire the mist hugging the hills of the Eastern Ghats.

Without the trappings of a regular tourist spot, the place offers the joy of exploring the road less travelled to an avid traveller. While there are no tourist hotels or stay facilities in the area, there are a few modest home-stay options offered by the villagers. However, one has to befriend them to get a cosy room for a night stay, along with a modest home-cooked meal. The other option is at Narsipatnam, which is half an hour’s drive downhill from Lammasingi.
