At a time when social media and newspapers are full of blasts, lynching and violence, here’s an initiative that comes as a breath of fresh air. The Robin Hood Army (RHA), a nation-wide organisation that works to address problems of food wastage and hunger, is tying up with its Pakistani counterpart for #Mission500k. “The idea is to get citizens across both countries to be aware and act on our common enemy: hunger,” said Neel Ghose, founder of the Robin Hood Army. Sarah Afridi, who set up the RHA in Pakistan, says, “What we need is not monetary contributions; just the time and compassion of our fellow citizens.”

#Mission500k will mobilise students, start-ups, families, and corporate offices to serve meals to five lakh underprivileged people on both sides of the border on Independence Day. The idea has won support from companies like Uber, Zomato, Snapdeal, Oyo, Grofers, Inshorts, Roposo, InMobi and Pressplay. These companies will use their platforms and social media reach to spread the word and will also contribute directly to the project by enabling people to donate in kind, as there will be no fund raising.

VH1 has also joined the bandwagon and artistes Farhan Akhtar, Uday Benegal (of Indus Creed) and Vishal Dadlani have composed an anthem for the project (https://www.facebook.com/robinhoodarmy/videos/1812778005621205/) “That anyone should go hungry in these days of excess seems terribly wrong and this is a way to correct that,” said Uday Benegal. Appealing to people to support this initiative, Farhan Akhtar said, “It’s our world. We have to make it better.”
