This Sunday, the annual event that features awe-inspiring stories of kindness is all set to take place. Every year, over a hundred dog-owners participate in this one-of-a-kind dog show that celebrates the people who rescued and adopted their companion animals from the streets, or brought them home from an animal shelter.

Started in 1977, The Blue Cross Great Indian Dog Show now features celebrity judges, medals for all contestants (that read Proud to be an Indian Dog) and trophies for categories that range from ‘Naughtiest Dog’ to ‘Dog with the Rarest Spots’. The show has no entry fee and is open to all non-pedigree breeds and mongrels. Even if you do not have a dog, the organisers welcome spectators who will hear rescue stories that range from the heartwarming to the hilarious. Some of last year’s highlights include a dog that was rescued from a brutal hit-and-run accident and

later adopted by his rescuers who also fitted him with a custom-made wheelchair. Audience members were left misty-eyed as the dog wheeled his way to the stage to receive a trophy for Survivor of the Year. Pups rescued from garbage bins or those nursed back to health from starvation will take the stage with their proud owners, as proof that fairytale endings happen all the time.

This year, there is also a special trophy for Dog’s Best Friend which will go to the owner of the animal, in addition to the main title of The Great Indian Dog 2014 (male and female categories). Unlike other dog shows, this one requires nothing of you or your dog – this means no ‘certificates of parentage’, no races, obstacle courses or contests. All you have to do is be there and tell the world the story of how you met your dog and saved his life.

If you don’t have a dog yet, but are looking to adopt one, you can visit their adoption section at the event that features Indian pups and kittens, and adult pedigree dogs for adoption free of cost.

To register, call 9952075570 or 9841040553 or email bluecrossofindia@gmail.com with subject line “Registration for Great Indian Dog Show”. Your dog must be vaccinated and leashed to you at all times during the event. The event will take place at the PSS School Grounds, Mylapore between 3 pm and 6 pm on 2 February.
