It is true that when you follow your dreams, the universe does in fact open doors for you where there were only walls. This is especially true in the case of Sandhya Parthasarathy, a software engineer turned home baker, who now runs a quaint store, Cake My Heart.

Sandhya recounts: “Baking happened quite accidentally when I was frustrated with my office schedule. After a long day at work, I would come home and bake.

“One thing led to the other and soon I was reconsidering what I actually wanted to do in life and where my heart truly lies.

“After a lot of trials on my friends and family, I decided to start my own line of custom cakes so I put in my papers.

“I started off with simple butter cakes and now I make everything from baked goodies to plated desserts.” She also specialises in wedding cakes and theme cakes for birthdays and anniversaries.

With so many home bakers around, Sandhya says, “At Cake My Heart, we ensure that all our products are freshly baked and free of preservatives.

“Also, they are mostly egg free unless the client specifies otherwise. And my customers have come to understand that eggless cakes are as tasty as the ones that contain egg. Also, our rates are very reasonable.”

Over the years, apart from perfecting her baking skills, Sandhya has honed her decoration skills as well. For now, she takes orders through her Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CakeMyHeart).

According to her, “The difficult part was finding my true passion but once that was clear, everything has been easy. Everyday has been a learning experience. Exploring my creative side which I never knew even existed has made this job as a cake decorator far more satisfying than my previous jobs.”

Among the challenges she faces, Sandhya says: “It took me time to get people to understand why customised cakes are priced the way they are. We use the best ingredients, tried-and-tested recipes, and invest so much of our time, so nothing comes cheap.”

Currently, Sandhya’s store doubles up as a baking studio where she conducts workshops. “In the coming days, I plan to do more of what I love- teach!”
