When you wear an outfit rich with sequins, it’s a challenge to use the right kind of accessories. You sure do not want to end up as a glittering eye sore! Fashion experts consider this micro trend as an important add-on to the whole get-up. “It could make or break a ball,” they insist.
In the case of sequin fashion, since the outfit is already heavy with all that glitz and jazz, maintaining subtlety is essential. Recently, Indian diva Priyanka Chopra nailed it with her high fashion acumen on a star-studded night in Hollywood. She put her bold foot forward, sashaying down in a metallic backless sequined number at the People’s Choice Awards. She sure was the cynosure of all eyes, dimming the strobe lights around.
“Fashion intelligence naturally averts fashion faux pas ,” offers draper Ridhi Arora. “If your event dress is already burdened with weighty brocades, mirror-work and precious stones, then it would be sensible to go easy on loud accessories and make-up so that it equalises the overall effect. Apply cosmetics in basic nudes. Play it down as much as you can. Avoid making a gaudy statement, as it lends an artificial touch to your look,” she recommends. The footwear, on the contrary, she suggests, should be visibly shiny to match the shimmery fabric.
Still confused about what make-up to opt for? Designer Rozina Vishram suggests going with nominal eye make-up. If you choose a light-coloured sequin item, opt for a plump red lipstick to make an impact on your dinner date. Less is more here. “Too many accessories may mess up,” she adds after a pause.
Prime sole shoes with a touch of sequins can be an added element for your casual outfit of the day. Since all things glittery are the new craze, here are more dressing options incorporating these elements. Combine a bomber jacket with a heavily studded sequin shirt dress and create an uber-cool look for a weekend outing.
Designer Swapnil Shinde too strongly votes for minimalism when it comes to hair and make-up. His picks are nude shades for the lips as well as the eyes when opting for a sequined evening gown. He also prefers a simple hairdo. “Plaits, buns or just long untied tresses can make a charming statement at select gatherings,” he volunteers. Stay clear of accessories, he suggests.
It’s a myth that men can’t do justice to shimmer. Shinde endorses the fact that sequin trends do not necessarily belong to women’s cabinets alone. “I think both sexes can effortlessly pull it off,” he says.
Just cast a glance at the gallery of all stylish rock stars, and you’ll know what we mean. Whenever they take centre stage, they not only set it afire with their electrifying gigs but also wow fans with a streak of outrageous, exotic, flamboyant and androgynous fashion statements.
Gem-studded jackets, suits, blazers, jumpsuits and tuxedos, sequin-loaded gloves, hats and boots, jewels, huge flares, bold and vibrant tints, high heels, thick platform soles, feather boas, slanted fedoras, furs, long-trained coats and bizarre hairstyles — everything becomes an extension of their identity. For instance, David Bowie, Liberace, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, and, of course, the king of pop, Michael Jackson, ruled the roost with their fashion antics.
For men taking baby steps towards glitter, Arora recommends starting off with ethnic outfits such as sherwanis and angrakhas embellished with sequins.
“Remember the kurta that actor Ranbir Kapoor wore in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ’s famous song ‘Dilliwali Girlfriend’?
That was a sequined embroidered piece and he looked impeccably attractive in it. It went on to become a huge rage among the youth,” ascertains Shinde.
For flashy formal parties and red-carpet occasions, he approves of sequined jackets, tuxedos, pants, ties or bows for super-hip and fashion-forward men. That’s sure going to unveil their irresistible appeal!
