The people of Madurai, known for their love of gold, have another reason to rejoice this festive season.
ArtKarat, a designer jewellery brand, is holding an expo-cum-sale of its new collection ‘Temple Jewellery’. Inspired by the ancient temples of India, the collection has nearly 600 individual designs.
Each piece echoes intricacy, luxury and refined aesthetics. Says Vikas Gupta, personal relations manager, “Temple jewellery is derived from the ornaments worn by Devadasis. Later, it branched into bridal jewellery. Since gold is getting out of reach these days, there’s an increased demand for designer jewellery.”
The collection features kundan, pachi, navratna and moti work. Most of the pieces are made on silver base with gold embossing and rudraksh or tulsi beads. The exclusive range of chokers is designed by Asha Kamal Modi, the chief designer of ArtKarat, and crafted by artisans from Dinajpur District of West Bengal. Kailash Singh, master craftsman from Calcutta, says, “Kundan work originates from Rajasthan and involves diamond embellishments on gold. Here, we use white and yellow sapphire on silver. These pieces radiate the same richness as real kundan. It’s affordable jewellery that demands similar respect and adoration as gold and diamond.”
“This is our first time in Madurai,” says Vikas. “The people here are much fascinated by art jewellery. There are more curious and enthusiastic enquiries.” All these ornaments are versatile in design, he says, and they can be modified and customized for each buyer. Dangling earrings, chunky chokers, stone-studded kadas, arm-bands and anklets are on display. “One can wear these pieces to parties and marriages,” says Melody, a student from France, eyeing a pair of enamel-studded jhumkas. “With minute detailing, they look classy and precious.
The expo also features a range of fusion jewellery that clubs Victorian designs with motifs of gods and goddesses embossed on pendants. “The jewellery looks heavy but is light-weight as it is only gold plated and not solid gold,” says Vikas. “There are also varieties that were worn by Bollywood celebrities.” ArtKarat’s ornaments were featured in Devdas, Monsoon Wedding and Kamasutra. Prices range from Rs.5000 to Rs.1,50,000. Jewellery bought here can be exchanged within one year with 75 per cent cash back. Life-long free post-purchase service is also offered.
