Compared to the Iranian artists’ recent exhibition at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, this time around, it is the paintings that are more visible. The exhibition also introduces two new artists.
The woman and her emotions becomes the central theme in Mashdokht Safavi’s paintings largely in acylics and oils. The woman is captured in various states of despair, in “Dead End” where she is depicted in shades of fiery orange with tinges of shadow and “Loneliness” where she is shown hugging herself sitting curled up on her sheets against a bright sunny window.
Her “Emotion” series in black and white also showcase the woman curled or crouched in despair.
“The main theme of my works is figures and portraits that depict something forming and something disintegrating. All of the figures have been painted from photographs, where I have tried to capture emotion. The woman becomes my subject because she is able to carry and express emotions much better,” says Mashdokht.The woman is also the subject in Masoumeh Zahedi’s work. Masoumeh’s women are fiery, in form and expression, especially in “Freedom”, a nude draped in a piece of red cloth.
Her “Self Portrait” is also fierce the canvas is filled with her face whose almost hard, brooding expression is partially masked by a shock of bushy, black hair.
The exhibition also features carpet designs and paintings by Somaye Keighobadi, photographs of tree barks by Armin Azarnewshe and sculptures by Majid Barouei, and artworks by Fatemeh Taghavi.
