Adopting a pet is not like buying a toy: Totem

This is Totem, and he is here to help me bust some common misconceptions that people have about adopting pets.

* Handicapped pets are difficult to manage: WRONG

Totem is a three-legged cat. His left hind leg was amputated following an injury. But that in no way restricts him from leading a normal happy life. He does have a couple of limitations – he can’t jump up too high for example. But he is perfectly able to take care of himself, and requires no extra care from my end. I also have a blind cat. She too doesn't require any extra effort from my end. Just a couple of simple things to be kept in mind though, not changing the layout of the furniture in the house too often, not making loud noises or approaching her suddenly, etc. Please be open to giving handicapped cats and dogs a home.

* One shouldn't adopt animals with skin problems: WRONG

When Totem came to me after treatment, he had two bald patches, and very coarse, sparse fur. It’s been just two weeks with me here, and one bald spot has already vanished and the other has reduced by 75%. All that was required was a healthy diet. Skin problems usually happen due to inadequate nutrition and are treatable. Avoiding adopting a pet due to that reason is just silly. You’d be losing out on a wonderful personality if you focus too much on appearances.

* Adult pets are difficult to adopt, they will not adjust easily: WRONG

Totem is an adult cat who came to me from Chennai, and went through a scary journey with strangers to get to Hyderabad by flight. Yet, it took him just four hours to become friendly with me. Most of these animals just need reassurance that they are safe now.

* Cats are not affectionate: WRONG

Too many people still believe cats are unaffectionate, and dogs make better pets. Cats and dogs are different, that’s for sure. But affection depends on what you give to the animal. First thing in the morning, I get a mandatory cuddling session, loud purring and lots of affection from Totem. My blind cat Midnight sits by any family member who is sick, till they get better. My other cat, Pepper goes on long walks with me, just like a dog. Please don’t judge cats by dogs’ standards, or vice versa!

* It takes effort to keep any pet: RIGHT

Adopting a pet is not like buying a toy. It is more like bringing a child home. One needs to be prepared to spend time with the pet, shower them with affection, and take them for what they are, not how they look. In return, the love and laughter you get are priceless. If you cannot spare the time and effort, then sadly, pets are not for you!
