It was a day of fun and learning for all the school students who took part in ‘Interaction 2013’, a youth service project organized by the Rotary Club of Madurai Mid Town. Nearly 500 students between 13 and 18 years of age, from eight city schools, participated and showcased their talents in over 12 competitions such as dance, skit, Tamil and English elocution, painting and writing. “The aim of this event is to bring children belonging to various backgrounds on a single platform. We call it the concept of ‘learning through activities’ where students get to interact and exchange among themselves,” says Nicholas Francis, the organiser. “Cultural programmes and contests are great ways to develop interpersonal skills and abilities in children.”
Rangoli competition reflected issues such as ‘Save Water’, ‘Child Labour’ and ‘Environment protection’ while children gave extempore speeches on ‘Nuclear Power – Need or Disaster’, ‘Face Book – Delight or Danger’ and ‘Misuse of Mobile Phones’. The highlight aspect of the event was that it was completely executed by the students. “This is an exposure for students as we give them the entire responsibility of conducting the programme,” says Nicholas. “We have also planned to replicate a similar programme for government schools.” The event was held at VMJ School and it was the eighth edition of ‘Interaction’.
