Gandhi: Warp and Weft , a new abstract dance-theatre by Padmashri Geeta Chandran will be staged at JTPac, Tripunithura, on October 5 at 7 p.m.
The work explores key concepts of Gandhian philosophy, through the narrative lens of a female dancer. The choreography plays with ideology through abstract movement as well as narrative gestures and incorporates both classical Bharatanatyam as well as contemporary movement theatre.
Geeta Chandran delves into Gandhian concepts of belief in the power of prayer and religious tolerance, celibacy, satyagraha, ahimsa, caste politics and khadi.
Geeta Chandran who began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five, under the tutelage of Swarna Saraswathy in the traditional Thanjavur dasi parampara, moved through learning diverse aspects of the classical dance form, from a galaxy of eminent gurus. She has amalgamated Bharatanatyam with her personal vision of dance from the country’s revered archives.
