A car that in an emergency can be driven using your smartphone!

Have you ever thought of driving your car with your smart phone? Have you ever been struck on the road in broad daylight with no fuel in your car? Have you had too many problems with the spark plugs and filters of your car? Well if your answer to the last two questions is yes, then the solution lies in the first question.

Now it is indeed possible to drive your car in an emergency using your smartphone. All this is possible due to the Mahindra e2o (powered by REVA). A new type of car, it was launched in New Delhi in the presence of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi alongside Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group and Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited at India Gate.

Mahindra e2o claims to take the good old Reva to a new level and is said to be among the most environment-friendly cars around. It is a fully automatic car with a boost mode for a quick acceleration and has a range of 120 kms on a full charge.

The charge takes about five hours and can be done from any 15 Amp socket at home or at the work place. Those staying in high-rise buildings need not despair. The company will provide a charging socket on the ground floor taking wires from the electricity meter. For those in the rare of rarest cases struck on the road with no charge left, there is an alternative – the car comes with REVive, said to be the first of its kind remote emergency charge activated through the smartphone application.

Priced at Rs.5,96,000 on road, it is a four-seater two door car for adults unlike the previous Reva where only two adults could use the car. Costing only 50 paise per km, the connected car technology of e2o is a synthesis of energy and mobility. For example the smartphone application can help lock/unlock the car by sending it a command and activating the car air-conditioner from remote, so, by the time you reach the car it will be cool and pleasant inside. Further the trip planner in the application integrates the distance to empty information from e2o into the maps and helps plan each journey with the current charge. The car comes with the facility to have real time feedback of all the vehicles functions like a doctor doing a heart beat check.

At the launch Anand Mahindra said, “The car will be bought by people who want to make the right choice. We are telling people to make the right choice, not just buy the car. We know we have to do well with the e2o as we have no other choice.” Dr. Goenka added, “We have a capacity to build 30,000 vehicles per year but in the beginning we will be pleased to sell 400-500 cars a month.”

The car is available in six shades.
