Slice of Bengal tries to present the traditional craftsmanship of Bengal in a chic, upmarket format

A concept store in Chittaranjan Park, the Bengali hub of the Capital, Slice of Bengal has something for everyone, each with a hint of Bengal! Started recently by husband-wife duo Amurto and Tina Basuray, Slice of Bengal is an emporium of handcrafted Bangla-origin apparels, jewellery, handbags, artefacts and much more. Not taking on the competition from state emporium, the store plans to be in touch with the changing trends.

Having been in the retailing and franchise business for over a decade, planning their maiden store wasn’t tough for the Basurays. “The way the products are displayed and the ambience – all combine to exude the flavour of a culture originating from the roots in West Bengal,” says Amurto, who is metropolitan with a passion for Bengal. “We wanted to go beyond products that are stocked in state emporiums, as they date back to the older times. Bengal has made a huge fashion shift. No longer are people wearing the traditional white and red taant saari, but a more cosmopolitan version of the same, which we are trying to showcase at Slice of Bengal.”

According Tina, “Slice of Bengal imbibes the traditional craftsmanship of Bengal, presented in a chic, upmarket format. Not only Bengalis but people from different cultures and origins are appreciating our products. We have tried to source all our products directly from the artisans and craftsmen of rural Bengal so that they are paid for their effort, thus cutting down the cost of middlemen. Our store houses products that are within the reach of most of the people,” she claims.
