2007, Euston Square, London. Suresh Selvarajan was walking to office when the sweet aroma of food hit him — a new Krispy Kreme outlet had come up. Suresh tentatively tasted his first ‘real’ donut. He was hooked. So was his wife, Dhanalakshmi.

When he returned to India in 2012, he wanted to enter the food business. “Donuts, that too 100 per cent vegetarian”, decided the couple. Suresh experimented to get the right dough mix and the toppings he had seen in London. Mukil’s Donut World was born. After outlets in the malls, he opened a standalone store in R.S. Puram. A dispenser has been set up at PSG Institute of Management.

“I was very particular the donut must be light and airy, not dense like the ones we are used to eating here,” says Suresh. He’s achieved that. The donuts arrive hot out of the fryer, looking like small brown moons. Chefs Bhavani and Lohith get to work on the donuts. One gets a mango puree topping; another a chocolate marble casing; a third has a butterscotch icing; and the fourth is a classic — glazed with sugar. That’s Suresh’s favourite. Mine, however, is an orange half moon (centre filled donuts), tangy and with just the right amount of sugar, and a savoury cheesy donut. There are more than 50 flavours to choose from, but we can’t go beyond six.

They are melt-in-the-mouth, and Suresh is right when he says you can’t stop with one. The outlet also serves a range of shakes, teas and mojitos. We tryout the chocoberry shake that is a lovely combination of decadent chocolate and pulpy berries, and the classic lemon-mint mojito.

Suresh says they are constantly experimenting and researching to an airy donut. He’s now working on interesting Deepavali gift hampers too. Prices start at Rs. 45 and go up to Rs. 150 for Delicious Fest, a sinful combination of donuts, ice-cream, whipped cream, nuts and chocolate-coated vermicelli.

The best part about the R.S. Puram outlet is that it has a see-through kitchen. You can watch the donuts being shaped, fried and decked up with chocolate, strawberry and all things nice. Mukil’s Donut World is at 8, Nandini Complex, West Venkataswamy Road, R.S. Puram. For details, call 98420-17800. They offer free home delivery for orders above Rs. 250.
