Ringing in spring

I believe in changing the vibe at home with the changing of the seasons. It aligns your mind and body to be in sync with the colour and temperature of the season. Flowers begin to bloom, temperatures increase and fresh crunchy watermelon makes its way into breakfast.

Infusing your home with hints of spring is simple. Close your eyes and think of three things that hold meaning for you as the weather warms up, and bring those into the areas of the home that matter to you the most.

For example, I love spending time on the couch, with my kids, watching a movie or catching up on our day. So, I change the cushion covers and bring in spring-friendly soft pastels. These could be plain colours in rose pink, lemon yellow, or mint green, in breathable cotton and linen fabrics. Quiet luxury should be your mantra.

This could work for your bedroom too. Alternatively, changing the curtains can really help; sheer fabrics that let the natural light in can work wonders for you.

Another trick I swear by is bringing spring indoors with seasonal flowers and small plants. Visit your local flower market at dawn to experience the offering of the season. Or, just stop by your local vendor. Be sure to buy a bunch or two of flowers as they are and never a pre-arranged bouquet. The organic mix makes the flowers look casual-chic and homely, as opposed to formal and restaurant-like.

When it comes to picking flowers, go in for softer hues — white daises or lilies, or pink roses. My favourite thing to do is get some of those extra-green leaves from the vendor. Place the flowers in a vase or pitcher by your couch or on the dining table. You can also place a single stalk in a glass or water bottle on your bedside table or bathroom sink. Similarly, small plants scattered about the house and even on your work desk will make you feel springy and oh-so-happy.

Most importantly, since dusk sets in late during spring, finish work and take a few moments to watch the sun set or the sky change colour. I love that twilight hour spent reflecting on the day gone by.

Make sure you find your little spot around the house to do this. An armchair facing the window or a bench on the balcony will do the trick. Sit and stare with a glass of iced tea and say hello to spring.
