Transit For Beginners , a collection of fifteen short stories by educationist and debutant author Rheea Mukherjee was launched at Atta Galata recently.
A co-founder of Bangalore Writers Workshop in 2012 and Write Leela Write, a design and content laboratory in Bengaluru, she has also written extensively for a host of magazines.
Talking about her book, she says, “Most of my stories are set in urban settings and are peopled by vulnerable characters coming to terms with their different emotions. The stories seek to trace the emotional journey of the characters. I try to avoid clichés in my writing.”
A short story enthusiast, she says, “People tend to be more invested in a novel because it is a single story. But I think short stories make for a great read in our fast-paced lives. It ensures that the reading habit survives.”
Rheea bemoans the lack of experimentation in Indian writing in English. She says, “I think there are many genres that have not been tapped. For example, in the West, you had Gone Girl that had literary merit and was experimental in terms of its plot. I think there’s potential for that kind of experimentation in India.”
Rheea is in the process of working on a novel for the past two years and hopes to complete it soon.
