INTACH, Madurai Chapter celebrated Madura Geetham as an obeisance to legendary singer M.S. Subbulakshmi on her birth anniversary

The third edition of tribute to legendry queen of songs, M.S. Subbulakshmi, just got over in the city.

Appropriately titled “Madura geetham”, it brought in some excellent performances and gave a chance to the locals to know more about MSS.

Organised by the Madurai chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the aim of this exercise is propagate classical music, which was the dream of MSS.

“Madurai chapter is making a genuine attempt to take this intangible heritage forward by introducing it to the new generation,” said the convener Arvind Kumar Shankar.

It also plans to take the music to mentally ill and geriatric and on peoples' demand we are trying to find more classical voices belonging to Madurai like Madurai Mani Iyer, he added.

On MS's 94th birth anniversary that falls on September 16, a small function was organised in her house on Hanumantharayar Koil Street and students and music teachers from Lakshmi and TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School rendered some famous songs effortlessly.

The mesmerizing songs – ‘Katrinile varum geetham' and ‘kurai ondrum illai' – wafted in the air making many passers-by stop and listen. Everyone kept looking at the photographs of the divine and gracious queen of songs as their lips sang her bhajans and songs.

After every song, Mr. Arvind Kumar Sankar, narrated interesting anecdotes and miracles from her life and also explained meaning of every line of the songs.

“Remembering MS Amma makes you feel great and the occasion is nothing but a treat both to your heart and ears. Her songs are hummed across the length and breadth; her melodies have become part of the country's treasure. We are making some efforts to preserve the treasure,” said Sunganthi, music teacher from TVS MHSS.

S.Sumithra, a Lakshmi School student, said after listening to MSS life story, she had fallen in love with her song and felt great that she too belongs to the same city as of the legendary singer.
