A cornucopia of information

MetroPlus is a cornucopia of information, portraying the vicissitudes of life. Its articles – on lifestyle, food, music, fitness, leisure, events, gadgets - envisages the art of life that every individual should opt for. The icing on the cake is the feature on the first page about the noteworthy people, rather the daughter or son of the soil, who till now have been inconspicuous but have become prominent through their inspiring achievements. The articles on these unsung heroes not only engenders self-confidence among people with low self-esteem but also stands as a beacon of inspiration to the society at large.

A few of my favourites were To See and Be Seen , Lessons for Life and Beyond Compere of the Tiruchirappalli MetroPlus . Apart from this, Through its interesting articles, MetroPlus truly lifts the mood of its readers.

A pleasure to read

As a reader of The Hindu for the past 45 years, I am delighted to share my views on any aspect of The Hindu , especially after having dabbled with writing also in its holy columns. "Parivartanamev sthiramasthi" said Sanskrit wisdom eons ago, meaning change is the only constant. The Hindu as an institution of nearly 140 years has adapted to this truism remarkably well.

One of the ways of manifesting this adaptability has been through weekly supplements such as the MetroPlus . The MetroPlus is a pleasure to read, focusing as it does on art, leisure and off-beat personalities of significant achievement, as in the feature of a Malaysian-born lady emerging as a good Bharatanatyam danseuse a month or so ago. As MetroPlus Tiruchi sheds its image of a child and evolves as a young adult by stepping into its 11th year, I wish the edition and the staff behind it all success and greater conquests in readership.

My favourite newspaper

I have been reading The Hindu newspaper for more than 25 years. I get a little worried if the paper is late for some reason, and wait eagerly at the doorstep looking for the paper boy. If I am touring for two to three days, then on my return, I immediately read the issues I have missed late into the night. Once, the newspaper could not be published due to some administrative reason. The next day, the paper’s editor expressed his regrets for the non-publication of the paper, and included an article too on the search for the paper by its readers the previous day!

The MetroPlus features many interesting articles on nature, personalities and other topics. Every week, I look forward to the supplement eagerly. The photographs, layout and flow of language in highlighting the subject are very reader-friendly. Since it is coming on every Saturday at the weekend, I sit leisurely at home and read the entire issue. It is informative and helps me read in a relaxed mood away from work issues.

Calibre without compromise

MetroPlus – a breath of fresh air into the Rockfort town of Tiruchi!

It did feel very special when The Hindu introduced MetroPlus to Tiruchi 10 years back. It was an acknowledgement of sorts - the small town of Tiruchi turning into a city. The calibre of The Hindu is something that all its readers are addicted to. MetroPlus is no different; it is entertaining and colourful, without compromising on the quality of its content, while keeping its standards intact.

Though I had the opportunity of reading MetroPlus in Chennai, Tiruchi edition has a flavour of its own, the flavour of the town; a sense of belonging and above all reading and learning about your own city and its people. Kudos to the Tiruchi team! May this journey continue for decades to come and looking forward to being a part of its silver jubilee edition!

Towards a more positive role

I have been an ardent reader of The Hindu right from age 16. Now I am 60. Not a single day passes without browsing The Hindu except when I am in remote places where it is not available. I take pride in being a customer of The Hindu for the last 44 years since it caters to a variety of people. I used to wonder if even a retired person will find time or interest to sift through the entire material provided from front to back. Though I read with interest National and International news, honestly I skip the Sports pages.

My favourite has been the Business Column with stock information but now it has been shifted to Business Line and I find it difficult to allocate time to read one more paper in detail.

The reporting standard in terms of quality and variety has been impeccable and flawless. But in recent times we do find some petty errors not heard of before.

Now coming to MetroPlus –Tiruchirapalli, it caters to both young and old alike. The quality of content has always been good.

But I always wonder if The Hindu can play a more positive role in bringing the local community together with a sense of patriotism and a feeling of love and affection with fellow citizens.

It is not necessary that only celebrities are highlighted for their achievements. It can play a role of triggering action wherever public find it difficult to get things done – either from the government or private sector. It can promote harmony in communities by interlinking/connecting rural achievements and play a catalytic role in relieving communal tensions.

In brief it can focus its energy to bring about peaceful co-existence of the populace and pave the way for a happier generation to come - which means eradicating poverty, assuring basic needs to the entire population etc. through realistic articles that kindle the imagination of the younger generation and work in tandem with all agencies to bring about a massive change in our country for benefits to reach all.

Congratulations to The Hindu MetroPlus Tiruchirapalli for passing through yet another milestone during its tenth anniversary.
