It seems that the saas (mother-in-law) has had her fill of being on TV. Sony Entertainment Television, along with Optimystix has come out with its new show, “Saas Bina Sasural”, a family drama sans the saas .
“For more than a decade, Indian television has been ruled by various facets of saas. Popular family dramas in the past decade, ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki', ‘Kasautii Zindagi Kay', ‘Kahin Kisi Roz', ‘Balika Vadhu' to name a few, all had one relationship that was predominantly highlighted — the relationship between saas and bahu (daughter-in-law). So, we thought of giving a whiff of fresh air to viewers,” says Vipul Shah, Producer, Optimystix.
“Saas Bina Sasural” is a story of seven guys and one lady named Taanya. This story is a rollercoaster ride experienced by Taanya who gets married into a family of only men, with nobody around to guide her. Says Vipul, “We have tried to shed light on the positive aspects of saas, by eliminating her from the household scene and portraying the suffering of the bride, due to the absence of the mother-in-law. We have tried to overcome the general misconception on TV, that saas is evil, all bad.”
The plot begins when Taanya gets married to the love of her life Tej, oblivious to the fact that his family consists of only men. Coming from a joint family Taanya always wanted to get married into a household where she could enjoy and cherish all the relations of a joint family. But little does she know that after marriage she will not have anybody to mother her in the house. The story is full of twists and turns showcasing how a 23-year-old girl becomes a warden of the men varying in age from 12 to 60.
“We have sketched each and every character of the show as if it was in your own house. The show displays every emotion from love to hate, from joy to sadness while Taanya goes through the stimulating walk of her life without a mother-in-law's guidance,” adds Vipul.
Apparently, what remains unclear is whether it is saas bina sasural , as suggested by the name, or sasural (in-laws' house) without women, because all the other woman characters of a household, like the sister-in-law, are absent from the plot as well.
The show has a mix of popular actors such as Darshan Zariwala, Arvind, Rajendra Chawla, Ravi Dubey, and Aishwarya Sakhuja. Aishwarya plays Taanya, while Ravi plays the main lead Tej.
The show is telecast from Monday to Thursday at 10 p.m. on Sony Entertainment Television.
