The recently launched Hindi general entertainment channel, & TV, has started a new show, Dilli Wali Thakur Gurls based on a book “Those Pricey Thakur Girls” by Anuja Chauhan published last year.
This past week, the five “gurls” of the serial were in the Capital to talk about the show.
One of them, Sarah Khan (Anjini/Anji), essays the role of the eldest daughter of Mamta Thakur and Justice L.N. Thakur, played by veteran television actors Supriya Palgaonkar and Anang Desai respectively. Shilpa Raizada (Binodini/Binny), Sukirti Khandpal (Debjani/Dabbu), Monica Sharma (Chandralekha/Chandu) and Meera Deosthali (Eshwari/Eshu) are the other daughters in this family drama.
Sarah clarified that the show is neither the typical “kitchen-politics” soap nor does it have loud humour like in so many comedy shows on the telly. “It is not like other exaggerated shows. It is very real and fun. Audiences don’t always like emotional dramas. They wish to see something light and fun, and see that life can actually be enjoyed,” said Sarah.
Sukirti, who has been part of the industry for a while now, confessed, “When I read about Debjani, the character I was offered, I found her to be a lot like me. Different from the rest of the sisters, she lives in her own world. Like her, I love dogs. In the book she has curly hair, as do I. She is very picky and has a soft heart. It got difficult when I had to tell myself to act rather then just be me. Otherwise, it came effortlessly.”
Shot across key locations in Delhi, including Lodhi Road, Connaught Place, India Gate, Hauz Khas, Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Delhi Haat and the India Habitat Centre, the show shows the Thakurs living on Hailey Road.
Monica, who plays the fourth sister, said, “I play a hot tempered, blunt and outspoken girl, who is gutsy and daring.” She looks up to her eldest sister and wants a life like hers while being enthusiastic about clothes, bags, and jewellery.” This is Meeraand Monica’s debut TV show. “Eshu is the bubbliest of them all, aspires to be a tennis player and shows the realities of the modern world to the rest of the family,” said Meera.
According to the actors, the show highlights that women are an essential part of the family with a father proud of his five daughters.
