Best known for her role as the harried and feisty bahu in “Tu Tu Main Main”, Supriya Pilagonkar has come a long way, carving out a niche for herself in television, theatre and films. With her latest show “Sasural Genda Phool” successfully striking a chord with the audience, Supriya talks to us about her show and the myriad aspects of her successful career.
Why did you choose “Sasural Genda Phool”?
It is a family serial, quite hat ke from what you usually see on television these days. It is something the viewers can identify with. The show is about how a young, newly-wed girl adapts to her new family, which is very different from where she comes and also how the family helps her get accustomed to her new life.
I play the role of Badi Maa, the bahu of the family, who has been abandoned by her husband. But the family has still stood by her and has gone that extra mile to support her.
I feel that more of such feel-good shows should be shown on television, where a family is shown in a good light. I love every minute of being a part of ‘Sasural Genda Phool' and I also enjoy watching it.
You have acted in a variety of mediums, from television to theatre to films. Which of these has been the most fruitful and satisfying?
Theatre is very demanding as the actor has to be repetitive and spontaneous at the same time. But even television has so many challenges of its own. It is not exactly the actor's medium, unlike theatre. Often there is nothing to do and the actor still has to do something which will make his/her character stand out. As a television actor, you must be prepared to do the best in whatever comes your way, even if it is against your convictions. The plus point of television, however, is its wide reach. It gives you a chance to actually get into people's homes. So, for me, both television and theatre are equally important and I am glad to be a part of both.
As a veteran T.V actor, what do you see the young brigade?
‘Tu Tu Main Main', by far, has been your most successful work. Do you see yourself returning to television comedy in the near future?
Why not! Apart from being the most successful, ‘Tu Tu Main Main' is also my personal favourite. I would love to do comedy, although I haven't come across many good scripts. But if I come across something I like I would love to take up comedy again.
You and Sachin were one of the most dynamic and loved couples on “Nach Baliye”. Do you think you would take part in a reality show again if an opportunity comes your way?
Definitely! I love adventure and I loved being a part of “Nach Baliye”. Maybe a few years ago I would not have opted for a reality show because it can get quite taxing. But now I am all pumped up and charged and if something comes my way I am prepared to take it up.
What about your future projects?
Currently on television I am only doing ‘Sasural Genda Phool'. Apart from that I have done a Marathi play called “Time Pass”. It has been quite successful and we have done about hundred shows so far. My movie, “Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai”, where I play Reitesh's simple Gujarati mother has just released. And yes, I am always on the look out for good work.
