The Earth Hour campaign, an initiative launched by WWF in 2007, has been significant in bludgeoning home the importance of pursuing a clean and green energy policy. Since its launch, the campaign has reached over 7,000 cities and 152 countries, and gets more supporters every year. In Tamil Nadu, actor Jiiva has pledged his support for the campaign.

At the recent Earth Hour event at the Taj Coromandel, the actor pointed to the success of the campaign in raising awareness. “When I was shooting for Nanban , I saw people even in small villages switching off their lights. Without knowing who was doing this (campaign), I too tweeted about it last year.”

At the event, Aarti Khosla, project coordinator of Earth Hour, urged people not to make this just a one-hour exercise but think seriously about alternative renewable energy. “The idea behind this campaign is to make sure we care about environment through the year.”

(The Earth Hour will be observed on March 23 between 8.30 p.m.and 9.30 p.m., during which all non-essential lights will be turned off)
