In case you were wondering whether you are a cat person or not, read on. You refer to them as the owners but the cat people like being owned by their feline companions and take great pride in keeping them satisfied. You might change the sheets more often because Snowball delights in sleeping on fresh linen and you probably steer clear of other cats because he gets pouty and jealous.
You put his favourite chair near the window so that he can gaze lazily at passersby, birds and squirrels. And you’re always sure to stock up on his preferred brand of food – loving a cat is the best job on the planet and it pays in purrs.
You admire their inquisitive nature. Whether it’s a new phone or the cardboard box it came in, Snowball necessarily needs to investigate it thoroughly before permitting his owner to use it. And if you’re spring cleaning, give yourself a couple of extra hours to get it done, for a curious ball of fur will be in your way at any given point in time, threading through the rubble and sniffing with excitement at all things old and new.
You learn from them. They show tremendous strength when they’re sick, bounce back from injuries with renewed resolve and adapt to the new environment with patience. As a bonus, they only get better with age – a cat is a master of the art of growing old gracefully while never forgetting to embrace his inner kitten.
You know they love you. Sure, they don’t bathe your face in licks or wag their tails in greeting but they have their own ways of expressing affection -- from the gentle, constant hum they emit when they’re firmly embedded in your lap to the way they blink at you slowly and rhythmically from across the room.
Then there’s the therapeutic, reassuring company they give you by relentlessly following you from place to place even if it’s to curl up in a corner just to be within your line of sight. Cat people learn from their pets that there are hundreds of little ways to say ‘I love you’.
