After being a health and fitness trainer for over 20 years, Nawaz Modi Singhania is back in Delhi, but this time with a different purpose. Her debut painting exhibition in the Capital, Movement, Dance & Speed, opens here, after her two solo exhibitions in Mumbai in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
The fitness expert and owner of Body Art Fitness studios admits having taken up painting a few years ago as she has had a lot of time on hand lately.
“I have been in the fitness industry for the past 20 years and that I'll continue doing, but at the same time my fitness studios are on their feet since a long time now, which provides me ample time to direct my creative energies somewhere else,” says Nawaz.
Her earlier works dealt with varied subjects like the plight of women, beauty, perfection, the play of light and shadow, day and night, sport and speed. She also holds a special fondness for the concept of speed because of family association — husband Gautam Singhania, chairman of the Raymond's Group, is a well-known race car addict. With her first solo exhibition in Delhi, Nawaz carries forward her association with speed.
The paintings, on display at Olive Bar & Kitchen, Mehrauli, fall under two categories — the first being the dynamic effects created by the speed factor wherein the artist has shown horses, cyclists and wind in full motion, and the other being dance, which is “the best expression of emotions”, says Nawaz. All her works are done in vibrant colours like reds, violets and greens. Nawaz generally likes to dip her brush in oil, acrylics and charcoal.
Besides vibrant colours, the use of the knife and bold straight strokes form part of her technique and style as she believes in “capturing the moment.”
The exhibition is on till September 22
