Simple and grounded are what best describe actor Trisha. From being born and raised in Chennai to making it as one of the top leading ladies in Tamil cinema, Trisha's roots are firmly in the city's soil. She tells NXg about her love for namma Chennai.
When it comes to Tamil cinema, very few leading ladies are from Chennai and can speak in the local language. How do you feel about this?
I had not really thought of it but now that you mention it, yes, it does seem like that. When I got into this industry, a lot of people encouraged me as it was like was a breath of fresh air for them to see a Tamil-speaking female actor. It feels nice to hail from Chennai and do Tamil films. But things are changing and it would be really nice to see more Tamil stars take up Tamil movies and add to the number.
When you started acting, you mentioned several times that you don't mind acting in other industries but you would always stay in Chennai. Why?
It was a conscious decision to have Chennai as home. When you are born and brought up in a city, it becomes an integral part of your life. There's a certain amount of comfort in that decision; be it friends or family. I enjoy working in movies and love travelling to Mumbai and Hyderabad but I always come back to Chennai. This is where my heart is.
If you had to make a film on Chennai what aspect of the city would you focus on?
I would focus on the culture. It's not just about temples, but life beyond that. Youngsters today love history and art and Chennai is the best example that comes to my mind to showcase our traditions and culture.
What's the one thing you would like to change about Chennai?
I love Chennai but, yes, I wish we could do something about the dearth of hangouts. Just hanging out with friends in places is something I miss. We should have more places in Chennai. Also I wish the late night partying curfew be lifted and people get to socialise and have a good time out.
