A girl reminisces about her father’s struggles to empower his daughter…
It was a coffee time chat and the conversation loomed over Father’s Day. While my corporate friends mused over the importance of the day, the word ‘father’ brought forth some warm memories of the most important person in my life — my father. My mind walked on the memory lane to pull up some important occasions in my life and how my father supported me to make me the person that I am today. In a society where the sons get preferential treatment over daughters, my father never made me feel that I was inferior to my brother in any way.
When he let me take up engineering on seeing my potential, in spite of his financial struggles, my close kith and kin were aghast over this idea. In those four rough years and later in the ever-ending job-search phase, he never once disclosed the financial struggles he had to undergo so that I could step in to this society as the first female engineering graduate from my conservative family.
Be it an education, job, career and every other phase in which I struggled, he supported me beyond his ability and ensured that I was happy. This ordinary middle class girl, sitting in a hi-tech corporate office, having a conversation with some bright minds in one of the most prestigious firms in India, can say so much about the sacrifice made by this great man. I am blessed to be his daughter.
