Who wouldn’t want a trendy haircut? It can actually change your overall look. With the world extremely conscious of fashion, this need to ‘look good’ holds good for both men and women. A good hair style, therefore, is now mandatory. And this is the prime reason for the rapid growth of the hair styling industry. Many would agree that styling one’s hair is one of the most important features of one’s personality development. Hairstyling as a career option is for those with a creative bent, who like to take risks and experiment. It requires imagination, care, precision, technique, control and combination. Qualifications

One can begin after Std. XII. The 13-week course (priced at Rs. 50,000) at Naturals Training Academy is open to both sexes. A comprehensive training in skin/hair/makeup is given on a regular basis. Experts from across the globe impart training to the stylists. Customised training is also given depending on the student’s requirement. The course gives one a scientific approach to hair, beauty and makeup. Training is given by experienced and highly qualified people. The institute also takes care of placement. To boost morale, students are given hands-on training in handling clients. The course combines theory and practical experience for sophisticated scalp treatments. The curriculum is divided into four modules. At the end of the fourth module, the student will be tested and certified by the institute.The various subjects taught are Personality development, Bacteriology, Sterilisation and sanitisation, lecture on hair and scalp, shampooing, conditioning, long hair design, temporary styles, lecture on celestial axis system, hair sculpting, hair spa treatments, perming, basic colouring and creative colouring. Students work in a salon like environment. However, the tools have to be got by the students themselves.

On the job

Freshers can start as trainees and then advance to junior stylists. Trainees are allowed to assist junior stylists and watch the cuts. Observation is the key to their learning and graduating to the next level. As junior stylists, one assists senior stylists and also starts independently with basic colouring and basic cuts. The next level is senior hair dressers who usually take care of hairstyle changes, client consultations and difficult cuts. The creative hairstylist is the highest in this hierarchy and they take charge of introducing new styles and style management on the whole. The average income of a hair stylist would start from Rs. 4000 a month and it can go up to Rs. 40,000 a month.
