The great Tamil poet, Subramania Bharathi had said kaalai ezhundhavudan padippu, pinbu kanivu tharum nalla paatu, maalai muzhuvadhum vilaittu, endru vazhakappadithikol paapa … It means ‘Dear child, start your day with studies followed by moral-giving songs, spend your evenings playing and make this a habit)
Children, today, are unaware of or indifferent to this, and are forced to study all the time. It’s all right to spend the academic year this way if you feel it’s necessary, but at least spare the vacation. Whatever students learn at an early age will stay with them as they grow older, but it shouldn’t apply during the holidays as well. Parents are willing to cancel tours and summer holidays so that their children can join summer classes for swimming, tennis, grammar, and even mehendi designing!
Vacation is one of the best parts of a child’s life to bring about good social and psychological development. Not only that, it also creates some wonderful memories. They will understand its importance only after they grow up, but by then it would be too late. There is a world apart from their school and coaching classes. Let them see it.
