Meet Sangeetha Vidhyadaran, who makes and sells handicrafts. Her brainchild — Sarah Creations — which she kick-started in January 2014 reflects her passion for all things creative and artistic. “Handicrafts were my hobby,” says Sangeetha. “I loved to create something from scratch for my family and friends. That’s how I began making albums, photo frames, envelopes, bookmarks and other articles.” Slowly Sangeetha began working on home decor items such as wood carvings, painted pottery, designer candles and more. This became a hit with her family and friends and, with their encouragement and support, she started Sarah Creations. Why Sarah? “Sarah in Hebrew means ‘woman of high rank’, and that’s what my business stands for.”

Though a talented artist, Sangeetha’s entry into the world of art came late. “I was always creative but I started experimenting only in my teen years. The thought of gifting something that I had made made me happy. Having equipped myself with knowledge of arts and crafts, I dreamt of having my own start-up.”

Her crafts are made of environment-friendly material such as printed paper, gift wrapper, cardboard, cloth material, beads and embellishments, wood and paint.

Social marketing

She has also honed her entrepreneurial skills by doing an MBA. Entrepreneurship is a core subject, which made starting her business easier.

“During my course, I got the opportunity to listen to many leading entrepreneurs and this was the biggest factor in my becoming one as well,” she says. Not to forget social media, which played a pivotal role in getting her show on the road. “This is the age of digital marketing,” she says. “People have access to information anytime and anywhere. That’s why I chose to market my products here. Initially, I wanted to gain recognition for my talent and work, which I achieved easily in Facebook. With that success, I started posting my products in an online store as well.” She feels that digital marketing helps get many customers and is also an easy means of communication to know what the customer wants.

Sangeetha has big plans for the future. “I have many ideas to take my business forward. I also want to bring to light the works of other people, whose talents haven’t been recognised yet,” she says.
