Good Grief

October 30, 2013 04:56 pm | Updated May 26, 2016 09:42 am IST - chennai

I completed my B.Tech this year in Anna University. Though I have good CGPA (8.8) and knowledge, I didn’t get selected in the campus interview. Though I’m capable and passionate to work I did not get a job in my field. Almost all of my friends got placed. I’m very much depressed and I hate the sympathy and criticism from people around me. I do not know how to overcome my depression and I feel like killing myself but on the other hand I want to live and prove that I’m a better person and that one day I too will be in a high position. But for now I’m unable to cope and hate that my friends are enjoying a happy office life. Please help me overcome this.

JOB HUNTER

I’m sorry to hear that you weren’t selected after your interview, but don’t feel disheartened. Many of us have been where you are right now, and probably felt the same way as you do: Can’t find a job that values our skills, the salary employers are offering is far below what we expected, all our friends love what they do and are getting paid well (ugh, the friends somehow always manage to get the “dream job” before we do, don’t they), etc. This is going to be a difficult time, but you have to be strong through it and start taking action. Marks alone are not going to be enough to land you a job. Since you graduated this year, you can still go to your college’s Career Cell to speak to a counsellor there and understand what your strengths and weaknesses are. Maybe it’s just a question of polishing your interview skills, or perhaps there are new skills you can learn (eg: becoming proficient at some software that was not taught during your course) that will make your CV more valuable. You need to start thinking in terms of how you can make yourself stand out from the crowd of other freshers. You also don’t have to limit your search to your field alone. Start exploring vacancies online in alternate fields that will utilise your talents. Finally, I would strongly advise you to enrol in some extra-curricular activity while you go about your job search: maybe volunteer work, pursuing a hobby seriously etc. It will give you a sense of accomplishment, which will go a long way in boosting your spirits (it will also look good on your CV!). Good luck!
