Imagine a Karan Johar-like script made by Abbas Mustan. That’s how Marry Go Round reads like. In this story of a supposed arranged-turned-into-love marriage, the speed with which the men and women fall in and out of love amazes you.
Filmy Plot
The story sounds like it’s taken from a flop 1990’s Bollywood movie and given a modern twist. Rooted in Hyderabad, it’s the story of a resolute mother trying to get her ‘Amreeka’ son married and settled. So far so good. But the stereotypes and clichés that go into making this happen is what bothers me most. Sample this. Every mother in the story is fat, covered with layers of chins and jowls.
And the fathers? The protagonist’s father is an ever-hungry, food-craving, perverted professor; the female protagonist’s father leaves his house to buy papers at the first sign of trouble and another father is a man who has way too much black money and an affair with a film star to boot. That’s not all.
The love interests in the story are pretty things who fall for Riaz at first sight. He is not any better either. He sleeps with Sarah an American, falls for Sana, conveniently forgets her and then marries to Meera. One minute, he is lovelorn and runs behind Sana (who by the way has a sad back-story, but let’s not go there) and the next minute he is after doctor Meera who saves his mother’s life.
Shallow characters
The storyline seems to be off the top of the author’s head and the characters have no depth and are not well etched. The parallel narration style confuses rather than tell the story. Like I said, Abbas Mustan would strike gold if they made this into a movie.
